Al Harrington ist tot: Hawaii Five-O Star stirbt im Alter von 85 Jahren nach „schwerem Schlaganfall
Der samoanisch-amerikanische Schauspieler starb am Dienstagnachmittag, nachdem er letzte Woche einen Schlaganfall erlitten hatte, wie seine Familie gegenüber dem Honolulu Star-Advertiser bestätigte.

„Al war wirklich ein Geschenk Gottes. Ein edler, mitfühlender, geduldiger und sanfter Mann mit einem witzigen Sinn für Humor und einem überlebensgroßen Lachen, das in meinem Herzen nachhallen wird, bis wir wieder vereint sind“, schrieb seine Frau Rosa in einer Erklärung.

Sie fuhr fort: „Er war großzügig, vergab schnell, war ein harter Arbeiter, ein Versorger und immer bereit, eine Geschichte zu erzählen. Er liebte seine Gemeinschaft und noch mehr seine Kultur. Es war ihm eine große Ehre, sein Volk auf dem Bildschirm zu repräsentieren und ihm außerhalb des Bildschirms zu dienen. Wer ihn kannte, fühlte sich gesehen, geliebt, sicher und willkommen. Als eine Ikone für Hawai’i trauern unsere Inseln und ihr Volk um seinen Verlust.“

Harrington – geboren als Tausau Ta’a – wurde in Amerikanisch-Samoa geboren und wuchs bei seiner Großmutter auf, bis er im Alter von 3 Jahren mit seiner Mutter nach Honolulu zog. Er schloss 1954 die High School ab und studierte sowohl am Menlo College als auch an der Stanford University, wo er einen Abschluss in Geschichte machte, berichtet der Star-Advertiser.
Nach seinem Abschluss kehrte Harrington nach Hawaii zurück und lehrte an der Universität von Hawaii. Außerdem arbeitete er als professioneller Unterhaltungskünstler in Waikiki.

1972 debütierte er in seiner Rolle als Detective Ben Kokua in der CBS-Fernsehserie Hawaii Five-0. Bevor er fest in die Serie einstieg, hatte er seit 1969 in mehreren Episoden früherer Staffeln in anderen Rollen mitgewirkt.
Nach seiner wiederkehrenden Rolle blieb er drei Jahre lang in der Serie und war einer der letzten noch lebenden Originaldarsteller der Serie.

Im Jahr 2010 nahm er am Reboot von Hawaii Five-0 teil und hatte eine wiederkehrende Rolle als Mamo Kahike.
Im Laufe der Jahre hatte Harrington auch Auftritte in zahlreichen anderen Fernsehserien, darunter Magnum, P.I., Scrubs und The Byrds of Paradise.
Im Jahr 2018 wurde er mit dem Hawaii Academy of Recording Arts Lifetime Achievement Award ausgezeichnet.

Er hinterlässt seine Frau Rosa Harrington, die Söhne Alema und Tau, die Töchter Summer Harrington und Cassi Harrington Palmer sowie mehrere Enkelkinder.
