Box-Legende leidet an Demenz!

Der mehrmalige deutsche Boxmeister ist dement. Der einst erfolgreiche Kampfsportler baut massiv ab – er findet seine Wohnung nicht mehr.

In seinen besten Jahren wurde neunmal Deutscher Meister und Vize-Europameister bei den Amateuren sowie Deutscher Meister und zweimal Europameister der EBU bei den Profis. Außerdem wurde er fünfmal als Deutschlands Boxer des Jahres ausgezeichnet. Doch von dem einstigen Ruhm ist nichts mehr geblieben.

Früher machte der „schöne René“ die Frauen in seiner knappen Boxer-Hose verrückt. 55 Kämpfe bei nur einer Niederlage René Weller (67) – eine deutsche Box-Legende.

Doch 28 Jahre nach dem Ende seiner Karriere, fightet er den letzten großen Kampf. Ein „Bild“-Reporter besucht den Kampfsportler. Dann der Schock: Der Mann der hammerharten Schläge ist schwer krank! Wellers Frau Maria (64) verrät ein trauriges Geheimnis: „René geht es nicht gut, er hat Demenz.“ „Als wir die Diagnose vor sieben Jahren bekamen, musste ich weinen. Was ich erlebt habe, ist eine riesige Herausforderung.“

Warum macht das Paar jetzt die Erkrankung öffentlich?

Die Begründung liefert seine Frau: „Damit die Fans davor Respekt haben. Es muss ja eines Tages auch raus.“

Bloß nicht stolpern, nur noch langsam bewegt sich der einstige Box-Star durch die Wohnung. René Weller: „Das ist nicht alles. Viele Pokale sind noch in Kartons in meiner Junggesellenwohnung.“ Doch die gibt es seit zehn Jahren schon nicht mehr… Einige Pokale werden jetzt im Internet versteigert.

Corona hat die Situation verschlechtert: „Manchmal habe ich René ins Auto gepackt und bin in Pforzheim spazieren gefahren. Inzwischen muss ich die Wohnung immer abschließen“, erzählt seine Frau. Warum? „Vor Wochen ist er aus dem Haus gegangen und fand nicht mehr zurück. Pforzheimer Leute brachten ihn mir wieder.“

Seine Frau hat nur eine Angst: „Dass ich früher gehe als René…“
