Der Star der Minnesota Timberwolves, Karl-Anthony Towns, geht schweren Herzens in seine sechste NBA-Saison.
„Ich habe viel durchgemacht und offensichtlich mit meiner Mutter angefangen“, sagte Towns am Freitag in einem Videoanruf mit Reportern.
Die Mutter von Towns, Jacqueline Towns, starb im April an den Folgen von Covid-19. Am Freitag teilt der 25-jährigen den Reportern mit, dass sechs weitere Familienmitglieder an Covid-19 gestorben sind.
„Letzte Nacht bekam ich einen Anruf, dass ich meinen Onkel verloren habe“, sagte Towns. „Ich fühle mich vom Leben ein wenig abgehärtet und gedemütigt.“
„Ich habe in den letzten sieben, acht Monaten viele Särge gesehen“, sagte Towns. „Aber ich habe viele Leute, die – in meiner Familie und in der Familie meiner Mutter – Covid bekommen haben. Ich bin derjenige, der immer noch nach Antworten sucht und versucht, herauszufinden, wie man sie gesund hält. Es ist nur eine Menge Verantwortung für mich, meine Familie gut zu informieren und alle notwendigen Schritte zu unternehmen, um sie am Leben zu erhalten. „
Nachdem seine Mutter im März zum ersten Mal auf die Intensivstation gebracht wurde, veröffentlichte Towns auf Instagram ein emotionales Video, in dem die Menschen aufgefordert wurden, die Pandemie ernst zu nehmen und alle Vorsichtsmaßnahmen zu treffen.
Towns spielt Center für die Timberwolves. Er war der NBA-Rookie des Jahres 2016 und wurde zweimal zum NBA-All-Star ernannt.
Die Timberwolves werden die NBA-Saison 2020-21 gegen die Detroit Pistons am 23. Dezember im Target Center in Minneapolis eröffnen.
