Clarence Williams III, der in den 1960er und 1970er Jahren als cooler Detektiv „Linc Hayes“ in der Fernsehserie „The Mod Squad“ eine Black-Power-Ikone war, ist gestorben.
Williams starb am Freitag, den 4. Juni, in Los Angeles an Darmkrebs, wie sein Management mitteilte.
Neben der Rolle in The Mod Squad, die er von 1968 bis 1973 verkörperte, trat er auch in Filmen wie Purple Rain, 52 Pick-Up, Reindeer Games und Tales from the Hood auf.
Williams begann seine Karriere auf der Bühne und erhielt 1965 eine Tony-Nominierung als bester Hauptdarsteller in einem Theaterstück für seine Arbeit in dem Drei-Personen-Drama Slow Dance on the Killing Ground.

Der vielseitige Williams hatte auch seine komödiantische Seite. Er spielte einen ehemaligen Anführer der People’s Revolutionary Army in Keenen Ivory Wayans‘ Blaxploitation-Parodie I’m Gonna Git You Sucka (1988) und arbeitete mit Dave Chappelle in Half-Baked von 1998.
Williams wurde von Produzent Aaron Spelling für The Mod Squad engagiert, der eine Hippie-Undercover-Detektivtruppe zusammenbrachte, die mit Peggy Lipton als Julie Barnes und Michael Cole als Pete Cochran besetzt war.
Seine über vierzigjährige Karriere umfasst die Rolle des gequälten Vaters von Prince, der auch Musiker war, in Purple Rain (1984), eine wiederkehrende Rolle in der surrealen Fernsehserie Twin Peaks (1990), einen guten Cop in Deep Cover (1992), einen Krawallmacher in der Miniserie Against the Wall (1994) und Wesley Snipes‘ chemieabhängigen Vater in Sugar Hill (1993).

Zu seinen weiteren Rollen im Fernsehen gehören Hill Street Blues, der kanadische Kult-Klassiker The Littlest Hobo, Miami Vice, The Highwayman, Burn Notice, Everybody Hates Chris, Justified, und Law & Order. Er ist in Filmen zu sehen wie 52 Pick-Up, Life, The Cool World, Deep Cover, Tales from the Hood, Half-Baked, King: A Filmed Record… Montgomery to Memphis, Hoodlum, Frogs for Snakes, Starstruck, The General’s Daughter, Reindeer Games, Impostor und als der frühe Jazzmusiker Jelly Roll Morton in The Legend of 1900.
Williams hinterlässt seine Schwester Sondra Pugh, seine Tochter Jamey Phillips, seine Nichte Suyin Shaw, seine Großneffen Elliot Shaw und Ese Shaw, sowie seine Großnichte Azaria Verdin. Er war von 1967-84 mit der Schauspielerin Gloria Foster (Orakel in den ersten beiden Matrix-Filmen) verheiratet.
