Al Schmitt, legendärer Tontechniker und Produzent, soll im Alter von 91 Jahren gestorben sein
Der amerikanische Tontechniker Al Schmitt, der mit Größen wie Steely Dan, George Benson, Quincy Jones und Toto gearbeitet hat, ist im Alter von 91 Jahren gestorben, wie berichtet wird.
Schmitt begann in den 50er Jahren im Apex Recording Studio zu arbeiten, wo er von dem legendären Tontechniker Tom Dowd betreut wurde und schließlich unerwartet eine Session mit Duke Ellington aufnahm.
Im Jahr 1958 zog er nach Los Angeles und landete 1963 bei RCA. Hier produzierte er Alben für jeden, von Henry Mancini bis Sam Cooke, und arbeitete auch an Filmmusiken mit Alex North und Elmer Bernstein.
Nachdem er RCA 1966 verlassen hatte, machte sich Schmitt selbstständig und produzierte Alben für Jefferson Airplane, Eddie Fisher, Glenn Yarborough, Jackson Browne und Neil Young.
Später produzierte er beide Duett-Alben von Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles‘ Genius Loves Company und mehrere Diana Krall-Alben. Andere Stars, die er aufnahm, waren Sammy Davis, Jr., Natalie Cole, Thelonious Monk, Elvis Presley, Tony Bennett, Madonna und Michael Jackson.
Schmitt hat mehr Grammy Awards gewonnen als jeder andere Engineer oder Mixer und wurde sogar mit einem Stern auf dem Hollywood Walk of Fame ausgezeichnet.
Er hat auch sein eigenes, von Leapwing Audio entwickeltes Plugin, mit dem Sie seinen Sound in Ihrer DAW nutzen können.
Wenn man Al Schmitts Diskografie durchforstet – was übrigens sehr viel Zeit in Anspruch nimmt – fällt es schwer, sich auf einen einzelnen Höhepunkt festzulegen. Seine jahrzehntelange, preisgekrönte Arbeit liest sich wie eine Reise durch die Musikgeschichte. In einem Gang findet man Frank Sinatra, Henry Mancini, Sam Cooke, Ray Charles und Miles Davis; in einem anderen stößt man auf Jefferson Airplane, Jackson Browne, Neil Young, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Kenny Rogers und Steely Dan. Um eine Ecke treffen Sie auf Barbra Streisand, Natalie Cole, Madonna und Quincy Jones, die sich mit Michael Jackson, Diana Krall, Celine Dion, Michael Bublé und Paul McCartney mischen. Es gibt nur wenige in der Musikindustrie, die mehr kulturbestimmende künstlerische Momente übersehen haben. Es ist wirklich schwer, sich ein Amerika vorzustellen, das nicht die musikalischen Fingerabdrücke eines seiner wichtigsten Talente im Bereich der Technik und Produktion trägt. In Anerkennung dieses Talents wurde Al Schmitt im Jahr 2015 mit einem Stern auf dem Hollywood Walk of Fame geehrt.
