Lively ist vielleicht den Meisten aus „Passenger 57″ ,“ The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants“ bekannt. Dort spielte er den Vater eines Mädchens, die von seiner eigenen Tochter Blake gespielt wurde .
Livelys Erfolge als Charakterdarsteller reichen bis in die 1970er Jahre zurück, beginnend mit TV-Rollen in Shows wie „The Waltons“ und „The Dukes of Hazzard“. Er trat in Filmen wie „Turner & Hooch“, „Air America“, „Passenger 57“ und „The Beverly Hillbillies“ sowie in beliebten Fernsehsendungen wie „The X-Files“, „That ’70s Show“ und „The West Wing“ auf .

Persönliches Leben
1979 heiratete Lively die Talentmanagerin Elaine Lively ( geb. McAlpin). Sie waren die Eltern von Blake und Eric Lively , beide Schauspieler. Er adoptierte Elaines Kinder aus ihrer früheren Ehe: Lori , Robyn und Jason Lively.
Er lebte mit seiner Frau in Heber City, Utah . 2003 erlitt Lively einen Herzinfarkt. Im November 2013 wurde Lively im Rahmen eines experimentellen retrograden Genverfahrens mit einer Stammzelltherapie behandelt. Lively starb am 3. Juni 2021 in Los Angeles an Herzkomplikationen.
