Die Darstellerin spielte in zahlreichen Filmen mit. Als klar wurde, dass Ann Willis Ratray die Krankheiten, die sie in den letzten Jahren geplagt hatten, nicht überleben würde, fragten ihre hingebungsvollen Schauspielstudenten – die durch die COVID-19-Pandemie an einem Besuch gehindert wurden –, was sie tun könnten.

„Schreib ihr“, sagte ihr Sohn Luke. Und eine Flut emotionaler Briefe erreichten sie. „Danke, dass du mir das Schauspielen beigebracht hast“, schrieb ein junger Star. „Ich werde dich ewig lieben.“ Ihr Ehemann, der Schauspieler Peter Ratray, saß an ihrem Bett und las ihr in ihren letzten Tagen Dutzende von Ehrungen vor. „Sie hat den Lauf so vieler Leben verändert“, sagte er, als er bekannt gab, dass Ann am 9. Juni in ihrem Haus in New York City mit ihrer Familie und Freunden um sie herum gestorben war. Sie war 81.

Ann Louise Willis wurde am 14. November 1939 in Cranston geboren. Sie hatte sieben Geschwister und die Familie hatte finanzielle Probleme.
Sie fand ihren Weg aus der Armut, als sie 1958 zur Miss Rhode Island gewählt wurde und am Miss America-Wettbewerb teilnahm. Sie gewann den Titel Miss Congeniality und nutzte ihr Preisgeld für ihre Auabildung an der berühmten American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York.
Die Schauspielerei war ihre Berufung, und ihre erste große Rolle führte sie 1964 zum Allenbury Playhouse in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, wo sie in „Separate Rooms“ neben dem gutaussehenden Schauspieler, der ihr Ehemann werden sollte, auftrat. Sie und Peter Ratray hätten diese Woche ihr 55-jährigere Ehe gefeiert.

Ein Wendepunkt kam 1990, als ihr Sohn Devin als Buzz, der Bruder von Macaulay Culkins Charakter, in dem Film „Allein zu Hause“ besetzt wurde. Als Devins Schauspielcoach fand Ratray ihre nächste Karrierestufe. Sie stieg zur gefragtesten Schauspiellehrerin für junge Schauspieler in New York auf und inspirierte eine Generation von Schülern, die Ruhm und Auszeichnungen erlangten. Casting-Direktoren suchten bei ihr nach neuen Talenten.
Zu ihren Schülern gehörten Merritt Wever, die Emmys für „Nurse Jackie“ und „Godless“ gewann; YaYa DaCosta („Chicago Med“); Kaitlyn Nichol („Schwärzlich“); und David Alvarez, der in Steven Spielbergs „West Side Story“ zu sehen ist, zusammen mit einem weiteren Schüler von Ratray, Corey Stoll, der in vielen TV-Shows aufgetreten ist und Ernest Hemingway in Woody Allens „Midnight in Paris“ gespielt hat.
Ratray hinterlässt ihren Ehemann, ihre beiden Söhne, Schwester Sue Zoglio, die Brüder David Willis und Douglas Willis und einen Enkel, Riley Ratray.
