Wiesbaden: Action Day Speed in Hessen am 6. August
Die Polizei zieht Bilanz nach verstärkten Verkehrskontrollen im Rahmen der ROADPOL-Speed-Kontrollwoche. Über 3.000 Fahrzeugführer überschritten die Geschwindigkeitsbegrenzungen, einige erhielten Fahrverbote.

In the course of the Europe-wide ROADPOL Speed Control Week, intensified traffic controls took place throughout Hesse from August 3 to 9. The aim was to raise awareness of the dangers of excessive speed. Speeding is one of the most common causes of traffic accidents and is a contributing factor in a large number of fatal traffic accidents.
The highlight of the control week was the „Action Day Speed“ on August 6. Around 240 officers were deployed across the state. In addition to speed checks, police officers in many places engaged in conversations with citizens to raise awareness of the dangers of speeding. Consideration, appropriate speed, and responsible behavior are important prerequisites for increased road safety.
Out of around 48,800 vehicles checked across Hesse on August 6, 3,018 drivers did not adhere to the prescribed speed limits. For 92 of them, the violation also resulted in a driving ban.
In the area of the West Hesse Police Headquarters, the officers identified several, sometimes significant violations.
On the Theodor Heuss Bridge, a vehicle traveling from Mainz to Wiesbaden was measured at 87 km/h. The speed limit there is 50 km/h. The driver faces a fine of 260 euros, two points on their driving record, and a one-month driving ban.
During a check in the area of Klarenthaler Straße/Blumenthalstraße, the officers also found that two children were being transported on the back seat of a vehicle without seat belts. For this violation, the fine schedule specifies a fine of 70 euros and one point on the driving record. During the subsequent check of the driver, the officers also discovered that there was a warrant out for his arrest. The man was detained.
Another check on the Theodor Heuss Bridge proved to be particularly dangerous. A blue VW Polo was traveling from Mainz to Wiesbaden and was measured at 64 km/h. When the officers tried to pull the vehicle over for inspection, the driver accelerated and drove into oncoming traffic. He then immediately turned onto Rampenstraße towards Wiesbadener Straße.
According to the officers on duty, it was only by chance that there was no traffic accident due to the absence of oncoming traffic at that time. An immediate chase and subsequent search for the vehicle initially yielded no results. Shortly after, plainclothes officers located the vehicle near Rampenstraße and observed it. A few minutes later, the responsible driver appeared at the vehicle and attempted to drive off. The plainclothes officers prevented this and arrested the man.
An investigation was launched against the driver, including suspicion of endangering road traffic, driving under the influence of intoxicants, violating the compulsory insurance law, and driving without a license.
Significant speed violations were also identified at control points in Southeast Hesse. A 54-year-old driver was measured at 141 km/h on the A661 in a construction zone where the limit is 100 km/h. He faces a fine of 320 euros, two points on his driving record, and a one-month driving ban.
In the city of Frankfurt am Main, a driver exceeded the permissible speed limit on the Sindlinger Main Bridge (B40) by a significant margin. He was measured at 141 km/h, although only 60 km/h are allowed there. He also faces a driving ban.
For increased road safety
The results of the action day show that many drivers still underestimate the dangers of speeding. Even a seemingly minor violation can be crucial in determining whether an accident can be prevented or has serious consequences.
The police therefore appeal to all road users to adhere to speed limits, adjust their speed to traffic and road conditions, and to always travel with consideration and responsibility.
Statistiken zu Verkehrsunfällen in Hessen für 2023
Im Jahr 2023 gab es in Hessen insgesamt 145.422 Verkehrsunfälle. Davon waren 19.527 Unfälle mit Personenschaden, was 13,43% entspricht. Schwerwiegende Unfälle mit nur Sachschaden machten 6.914 Fälle aus, was 4,75% aller Unfälle entspricht. 1.164 Unfälle wurden unter dem Einfluss berauschender Mittel verursacht, was 0,8% aller Unfälle ausmacht. Die meisten Unfälle (81,02%) waren Übrige Sachschadensunfälle. Innerorts ereigneten sich 14.839 Unfälle (10,2%), außerorts (ohne Autobahnen) waren es 7.577 Unfälle (5,21%) und auf Autobahnen 3.013 Unfälle (2,07%). Insgesamt gab es 188 Getötete, 3.537 Schwerverletzte und 21.704 Leichtverletzte.
