Arlene Golonka, eine erfahrene Charakterdarstellerin, die vor allem für ihre Rolle als Millie Swanson in „Mayberry RFD“ bekannt ist, starb am Montag in West Hollywood, Kalifornien.
Sie war 85 Jahre alt. Ihre Nichte Stephanie Morton sagte, sie habe an Alzheimer gelitten.

„Sie lebte und atmete als Künstlerin, als Schauspielerin wurde sie geboren“, sagte ihre Nichte, „Sie war eine sehr weise Frau, die ich glücklicherweise meine Tante nennen durfte.“ „Sie liebte es zu unterrichten“, sagte Morton, die berichtete, dass zu ihren Schauspielschülern auch Halle Berry gehörte.

In einer über 45-jährigen Karriere spielte Golonka wiederkehrende Rollen in „The Doctors“, „Joe & Valerie“ und „1st & 10“ und trat in Episoden von „The Mary Tyler Moore Show“, „M*A*S*H “ und „Der König der Königinnen“ und eine Gastrlle in „King of Queens“. In „The Andy Griffith Show“ spielte Golonka in zwei Folgen Millie Hutchins, die Freundin von Sam Jones (Ken Berry), und sie wiederholte die Rolle der Millie Swanson in „Mayberry RFD“ in 34 Folgen.
Golonka wurde am 23. Januar 1936 geboren und verbrachte ihre Kindheit in Chicago, wo sie zwischen Gesangs- und Schauspielunterricht wechselte und am renommierten Goodman Theatre studierte. Im Alter von 19 Jahren zog sie nach New York und begann eine Karriere am Broadway und in Filmen, die in New York City gedreht wurden, und studierte bei Lee Strasberg, Sanford Meisner und Uta Hagen.

Als Mitglied von The Actors Studio war Golonkas erste große Produktion „The Night Circus“ mit Ben Gazzara, die in Connecticut begann und dann für sieben Aufführungen an den Broadway zog.

In den späten 1960er Jahren zog Golonka nach Los Angeles, wo sie weiterhin kleine Rollen auf der großen Leinwand spielte und sich auch ins Fernsehen wagte. Golonka etablierte sich bald als einer der am härtesten arbeitenden Charakterdarsteller in Hollywood und trat in den nächsten drei Jahrzehnten in Dutzenden von Serien auf. In Serien wie „That Girl“, „The Streets of San Francisco“, „Fantasy Island“ und „Murder, She Wrote“ tauchte Golonka sogar als andere Charaktere wieder auf.
Zu ihren Filmrollen gehörten „Airport 77“, „Hang ‚Em High“ mit Clint Eastwood und „The In-Laws“.
Golonkas Stimme erschien auf dem Comedy-Album „You Don’t Have to Be Jewish“ von 1965 und in animierten Fernsehsendungen wie „Speed Buggy“, „The New Yogi Bear Show“, „Capitol Critters“, „Yogis Treasure Hunt“ und “ Die neuen Scooby-Doo-Filme.“
