Olympia-Star stirbt bei Unfall

Buckie Leach, olympischer Fechttrainer, im Alter von 62 Jahren bei Motorradunfall gestorben

Der Fechttrainer der USA, Buckie Leach, ist nach einem Motorradunfall in der Nacht zum Samstag verstorben, heißt es in einer Erklärung.

Er wurde 62 Jahre alt.

Leach trainierte die amerikanische Fechtmannschaft bei den diesjährigen Olympischen Spielen in Tokio sowie bei den Spielen 1996 in Atlanta, 2000 in Sydney, 2004 in Athen und 2016 in Rio.

Er verhalf der Amerikanerin Lee Kiefer in diesem Jahr zur ersten olympischen Goldmedaille der USA im Florett der Frauen. Er trainierte auch in Notre Dame, wo Kiefer studierte.

Leach ist Mitglied der US Fencing Hall of Fame, in die er 2013 aufgenommen wurde.

Laut der Erklärung vom Fechtteam der USA war Leach „nach seiner Rückkehr von den Olympischen Spielen in Tokio auf einer Reise quer durchs Land“, als er tödlich verunglückte.

„Unsere Herzen sind gebrochen über den Verlust von Buckie Leach, dem Trainer des US-Frauen-Florettteams, nur zwei Wochen, nachdem er das Team bei seinen fünften Olympischen Spielen angeführt hat“, teilte sein Team USA in den sozialen Medien mit.

„Es waren sein Herz, seine Leidenschaft und sein Lachen, die Buckie zu einem der beliebtesten Trainer in diesem Sport machten. Unsere Gedanken sind bei Buckies Familie und der gesamten Fechtgemeinschaft.“

Ursprünglich sollten die Olympischen Sommerspiele vom 24. Juli bis 9. August 2020 abgehalten werden, wurden jedoch wegen der COVID-19-Pandemie um ein Jahr verschoben; damit wurden erstmals Olympische Sommerspiele außerhalb des üblichen 4-Jahres-Rhythmus angesetzt. Sie fanden pandemiebedingt größtenteils ohne Zuschauer und ohne Angehörige von Athleten statt.
